What's a schooner?
A few weeks into Erskineville, we'd already claimed our spot at Rose of Australia — a pub with several seating areas for every kind of night out. Our family always landed in the enclosed patio.
On one of these visits I was tasked with going to the bar to order drinks. When I ordered my husband's beer, the server casually asked "a schooner?" Between the new word and the accent I was still getting used to, I gave them a full deer-in-the-headlights look and very smoothly said... "What?"
They kindly held up two glasses and pointed: schooner is 15oz, pint is 20oz, and if you're committed, a jug is 40oz. Mystery solved.
Will I ever order a schooner confidently with my Texan "r" intact? Honestly, probably not. But at least now I know what I'm pointing at.
