Nobody warned me about the spear guns

My neighbour back in Texas is married to an Australian and did her best to prepare me for our upcoming move by explaining certain words, personalities, and the school system. Adam and I also did our fair share of watching YouTube videos from American expats listing their biggest revelations about Sydney life.

Not one of them mentioned the spear guns.

Over the course of a few days, I saw not 1, not 2, but 3 different people casually walking around, or loading onto a bus or train, carrying spear guns. My current most Australian image: a barefoot teenage boy walking alongside my family at Coogee beach, spear gun in hand, heading for the bus like it was the most normal thing in the world. Even Remy did a double-take.

Where was this in the YouTube videos? A girl would like some warning.
